Rereading the Private series by Kate Brian

In preparation for my own WIP that’s set in a boarding school, I wanted to re-read the series that made me fall in love with boarding school books–the Private series by Kate Brian. So this year, I read all of them again. Technically, I read Private in 2018, but I started with the second book and read them all this year, finishing up at the end of August. I’ll re-read the spin-off series Privilege soon too, but wow, what a nostalgic reading experience. It made me realize how intricate the books were, how they probably went on for too long (witches, really?) and ultimately, it gave me a lot of ideas for what I do and don’t want to do with my boarding school WIP.

So, as a recap, Reed Brennan gets a scholarship to go to elite, CT boarding school Easton Academy and things immediately go to hell. The rich popular girls pick on her, she falls in with a bad boy guy, and oh yeah, then he goes missing. But soon, Reed is taken in by the Billings girls, her life is put in danger, more people die, she falls in love again, she gets dumped and drugged and tricked and deceived, and then, she finds out she might be a witch. LOL, yeah, I know, right? I don’t even know how to explain that. Oh, and she’s once left for dead on a deserted island. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, but you can’t look away. The series gets crazier and crazier but it’s fascinating and the cliffhangers are so well done. Plus, the supporting cast is fascinating. I love every time Reed gets a new love interest and he’s the hottest thing since sliced bread, haha.

I also love how every possible twist and cliff hanger is incorporated into these 15 books and the way boarding school life still must go on. Can’t wait to dive fullspeed ahead into my WIP this november at NaNoWrimo.
