5 Books I’m Excited For (October 2023)

Spooky time is upon us, and the spookiest thing of all is how long my TBR list is! That’s what really haunts me: all the great books coming out I’ll never have time to read.

But spooky thoughts aside, here are 6 books I’m looking forward to that are publishing in October….even if I may not read them until next October!

Brooms by Jasmine Walls and Teo

I love a good spooky middle grade/YA graphic novel, and this one is queer and historical fiction set in the 1930s, so I KNOW it’s going to blow my mind. I’ve placed my hold on this with the library system, so hopefully it’s in my hands shortly after it releases on October 10th! Though the “Fast and Furious” comp does concern me a bit..I hope that just means a racing element, haha.

Mary and the Birth of Frankenstein by Anne Eekhout

I took a Frankenstein-themed pilgrimage in 2022, so I basically consider all things Mary Shelley mandatory reading now, and this is no different! It’s a dark literary take on the most famous creation story of probably any novel these days. Out October 3rd, it promises to be a spooky historical moment that looks at her childhood and the origins of Frankenstein, and I can’t wait!

Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle

Any book that’s advertised as “Ninth House meets Deadly Education” is an attention catcher for me, and this was no different! I don’t love the cover or that it’s sold as pure fantasy….but I’m willing to give it a shot! This book is out on October 3rd!

American Girl by Wendy Walker

The description of this book–small town girl gets tangled up in powerful man murder thingy–reminds me of several books I’ve loved, and while I have only read one of her other books–Emma in the Night–I really enjoyed that one and found it propulsive, so I’ll definitely keep this on the shelf for when I need a quick thrilling read. This is out October 17th.

By Any Other Name by Erin Cotter

On today’s SECOND episode of “what a tagline” we have “A down-on-his-luck actor and an English lord reluctantly team up to solve the murder of Christopher Marlowe in this Shakespearean-era young adult romp perfect for fans of F.T. Lukens and Mackenzi Lee.” which I think was written specifically to grab my goblin brain? I can’t wait to dive into this one, even if it’s listed as 464 pages which terrifies me. This is publishing on October 10th.

The Little Books of the Little Brontes by Sara O’Leary and Briony May Smith

This book also, I believe but cannot prove, was grown in a lab to tempt me. Love the Brontes, love sister books (obviously, LW fan here) and love adapting classics to reach young readers in inventive day, which this appears to do with a great mix of illustrations, historic images, etc. This releases on October 10th and since it’s only 40 pages…I’ll make sure to slot it in!

White House Clubhouse by Sean O’Brien

I’m a sucker for a kids book set in DC because I’m a children’s librarian in DC, and there are so many great White House kids books I love already–I hope this one is equally as engaging. I’m hoping to go to an author talk this guy is doing when it releases on October 3rd, so perhaps that will make me want to read it right away rather than just recommend it. The time travel element does sound fun….
