September 2023 Reading Recap

Q3…is over. My hopes and goals for the year…almost over as well. September 2023 was one of my WORST reading months of the year, because I felt like I didn’t have time to finish any of the books I started and didn’t absolutely enjoy, but I also went whole days without opening a novel because of my schedule. Sigh.

Anyway..it’s over, and I can get back on track soon! Hopefully.

I did not do a great job of tracking my DNF’s or “partial reads” in September, so I suspect that my total of 39 books is an underestimate, but I don’t even know how many books I looked at and DNF’d for my award committee this month, in all honesty. It’s at the point in the year where I KNOW when a book isn’t winning, you know?

So…yeah. Let’s get into the statistics!

I read 39 books in September! Which is like HALF of what I normally read…but I also read way less picture books this month, I feel like! 10 of the books I read were for Capitol Choices, 1 for my DAR book club, and 1 for Booklist.

I read 5 graphic novels–all of which I liked! Two Tribes, The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich, The Talk, Ghosts Don’t Eat Potato Chips, and Ghost Books! Two Tribes and Ghost Book I had been looking forward to for so long–and neither disappointed. The Princess and the Grilled Cheese was for Capitol Choices, in the YA category, but I was really pleasantly surprised by it–it reminded me a lot of The Prince and the Dressmaker with a more “anime” style without being manga.

One thing I AM proud of this month is going back and trying to finish books–short story collections, non-fiction titles, in particular–that I didn’t finish in months past. I finished one longer essay collection, and have read a few more short stories in one collection. I’m still working through another non-fiction and an audiobook from September into October but…I’m proud of that! I like the books, they’re just not a priority, so taking them in slowly is working out just fine.

October is going to be my month, I just know it! I’m going to take a mini break after our Carnegie Longlist is decided to read some ME books, work ahead on a few blogs and hopefully…hopefully…finish the lingering short story collections.

I have a few “oooh” free books I want to read in October—including the second Skander and the Unicorn Thief Book, the April & Mae easy readers, and Worst Broomate Ever and it’s sequel.

Stay tuned!
