Huda F Cares

We love a National Book Award finalist and a graphic novel that’s funny, humorous, and a quick but thoughtful read! A few years back, I read an print ARC of another Huda Fahmy book, Huda F Are You, so I was already familiar with her style and humor when the NBA lists came out this year, so I made sure to make time to read Huda F Cares .

In Huda F Cares, Fahmy continues her non-memoir biographic-esque storytelling about a young Muslim girl, her sisters, her family, and her life. In this one, fictional Huda and her family go on vacation to Disney, and the sisters pair up day to day. It’s about sisterhood but also has an underlying theme of how hard it can feel to be Muslim in public places with a non-pedantic but still thought-provoking conclusion. This is a quick read that’s a great Window Book–letting you see this world and Huda’s experiences, and almost step into them like a sliding glass door through the illustration style, which is flat-ish but still dynamic and full of humorous facial expressions.

I really like Fahmy’s style and enjoy the way she utilizes humor to make these books stand out. They’re young adult books in my library, and on most lists, but I would be comfortable handing them to a 5th grader interested in dry humor, situational irony, and sisterhood.
