The Stars in Our Eyes

I’ve got something of an obsession with celebrities and entertainment news, so when I heard about Julie Klam’s book, The Stars in Our Eyes, on a Book Riot New Release podcast, I immediately added it to my TBR list. I finally devoured it this week, and I was not disappointed.

Julie Klam looks at what is means to be a celebrity, what it’s like to be a celebrity, and how we as normal human beings approach celebrity in this book, and while it isn’t something “new” and “exciting” it is an interesting look at this world by someone who is also enamored with it, and by her own account, has worked in and alongside it for years.   This book doesn’t finally crack the code about how the Kardashians really became famous, why we can’t get enough of shows like The Real Housewives, or why some child actors succeed and some end up dead, but it does take an interesting look at some of those topics along the way. At the end of the day, I felt relieved that there are real, functioning adults out there who, like me, are addicted to the latest news about certain celebrities and were absolutely heartbroken by Brad and Jen’s breakup, even if it had nothing to do with us.

If you like celebrities, are confused about why you like celebrities so much, and want someone to talk to about that, this is the perfect book for you. It’s funny and full of interesting little anecdotes and insights into the biz. One of my favorite parts of the book is the “intermissions” between chapters when people in Klam’s life talk about a memorable celebrity encounter. Some of them will make you swoon, some will make you laugh, and some will make you really angry. It’s an awesome experience.
