One of the most fascinating things (okay…maybe that’s an overstatement) I learned in my undergraduate copyright courses was that you can’t copyright a title of a book, art work, etc. It’s obvious when you think about it, right? A title is just a string of words, and there are only so many words in the world. Plus, what happens when one good title is taken? Can you imagine no one being able to use “Twice Bitten” because someone got there first? There go all the good vampire romances! Knowing that, I enjoy looking for books that share the same title. We all remember the Tomi Adeyemi/Nora Roberts drama right? There are only so many titles…and sometimes the shared titles matter (Macbeth retellings, for example) and sometimes they don’t AT ALL.
Let’s look at some pairings that share the same title.
The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter and Diana Layne
Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Jo Nesbo
The Idiot by Fyodor Doestoevsky and Elif Batuman
Heartless by Marissa Meyer and Mary Balogh
Lucky in Love by Kasie West and Jill Shalvis
No Exit by Taylor Adams and Jean-Paul Sartre
Pandemic by Robin Cook and AG Riddle
All Fall Down by Ally Carter and Jennifer Weiner
My Soul to Take by Yrsa Sirgurdardottir and Rachel Vincent
Foul is Fair by Hannah Capin and Jeffrey Cook and Katherine Perkins
