Books at the Box Office: The One and Only Ivan

In March, I made it my mission to read the most recent Newbery Medal books, and that was the first time I read The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, someone who I’ve read for years. The One and Only Ivan was a book I liked well enough, but didn’t understand the hype until all of a sudden THAT happened and I started bawling. So, I’ll be excited to see the film, even if it’ll be the first Angelina Jolie movie I’ve seen since the Brad & Jen breakup.

And now, thanks to Coronavirus, you can stream it on Disney+ as of August 14, 2020.

First, the book:

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Now, the movie:

INSERT TRAILER HERE??

The movie’s one of those animated-esque ones–don’t even get me started–with Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny Devito, and Helen Mirren. Bryan Cranston also plays the mall owner. I’m sad this movie wont’ get a theatrical debut, but excited for it to be in our homes in August!
