I don’t think I was really the right age at the right time to CONNECT with Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants when they first entered my life the books or the movies, but I definitely remember the crazy a-list girl casting for the time, and obviously that’s help up pretty well, so maybe it did hit gold with this grouping?
Let’s look at the book first, which is the first in a series that probably went on too long and definitely gave us multiple POVs even though we all had a favorite. Mine was Bridget, obviously.
Carmen got the jeans at a thrift shop. They didn’t look all that great: they were worn, dirty, and speckled with bleach. On the night before she and her friends part for the summer, Carmen decides to toss them. But Tibby says they’re great. She’d love to have them. Lena and Bridget also think they’re fabulous. Lena decides that they should all try them on. Whoever they fit best will get them. Nobody knows why, but the pants fit everyone perfectly. Even Carmen (who never thinks she looks good in anything) thinks she looks good in the pants. Over a few bags of cheese puffs, they decide to form a sisterhood and take the vow of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants . . . the next morning, they say good-bye. And then the journey of the pants — and the most memorable summer of their lives — begins.
Not so fun fact: this book was originally published on September 11, 2001.
Now,the movie, which came out in 2005, meaning it is turning FIFTEEN in 2020. Spooky.
Yes, there is a 2008 sequel, but we’re not talking about that. Amber Tamblyn plays Tibby, Blake Lively is Bridget, America Ferrera is Carmen, and Alexis Bledel is Lena. What a cast of teen phenomenons of the time, am I right? Plus, it was directed by Ken Kwapis, who also did 2009’s He’s Just Not That Into You.
Maybe I’ll like this even more if I rewatch now as an adult? Maybe? It’s not streaming anywhere, but you can rent it on Amazon Prime. It’s got a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, which has I’ve learned from the research for this series is insanely good for book adaptations.
