Ready for another slightly off-kilter book that’s really good but kind of..weird? Okay, good, because All’s Well by Mona Awad. I have been meaning to read Bunny for forever, and haven’t gotten to it yet, so this was by first book by her and it was…something. I like theatre, I like literary fiction, and ultimately, this was a 4 star read for me.
Miranda Fitch is a theatre associate professor with debilitating chronic pain and a almost-addiction to pain killers who frankly, doesn’t even like her job that much. She’s a former actress who’s only in the classroom by default, but she’s excited about this year’s production: All’s Well That Ends Well. Unfortunately, her students aren’t too keen on it, and try to stage a coup to do Macbeth. But then, in a haze, Miranda meets three men who can change the tide for her in the way that no doctor ever has been able to. But at what cost, right? That’s always the question. As things start going better for Miranda, they start going poorly for the people around her. Can the show go on?
This is a very strange novel that does that dance between reality and fantasy–what is in her mind versus what is real, what’s the medicine talking and what’s before her eyes. The characters are rich and fascinating in their own ways, the theatre scene is delictable to dive into in a bonkers way, and I really enjoyed how frantically I was turning the page by the end!
A 4 star read for me!
